DIY: Flag mounts for Walls

Writer's picture: Shalene MeloShalene Melo

Hey all! It has been awhile (again) since I've posted on family projects. Summer 2022 has come and gone, but believe me, there are posts coming. My plan to catch up? I'll post what we did last weekend and add anything that we missed.

First up: a durable flag mounting system for our garage walls (or any walls). Previously we used 3M hooks and they worked fine. Throughout the year though, a nice gust of wind would blow them off and remounting them was pretty annoying.

After seeing the Tik Tok videos for renter friendly solutions for hanging curtains, I figured I could easily retrofit a solution for this. Please see the steps below and enjoy! This worked out pretty well and is a fun solution under $5.

Materials

From the Dollar Store, I picked up: (Adjust the amount accordingly to the number of flags you will mount. I did 2.)

  • 2 Broom Handles

  • 2 Garden tool hangers

What I already had at home:

  • Double sided tape

  • Zip ties

  • Flags

  • Screws (I used the leftover ones from the Laundry Room Glow Up)

  • Optional: Drywall Anchors (if not going through the wall studs)

Tools Needed

  • Scissors

  • Box cutter

  • Ruler

  • Measuring tape

  • Pencil

  • Drill

  • Level

  • Ladder

  • Drill/Bits to match the screws

  • Black Sharpie marker

  • Optional: Stud finder (if you are going through the studs)

Steps

  1. Remove the wall hanger tip of the broom handle by just pulling it off. You are left with a straight tube edge.

  2. Secure your flag to the broom handle.

    1. I used zip ties and feed them through the flag grommets.

    2. Use the scissors to clean up and cut off the excess zip tie ends.

    3. I also used double sided tape to prevent sagging in the middle of the flag.

  3. Split the Garden Tool Hanger to 2 hooks using the box cutter.

    1. I drew a straight line 1/4" toward the side of the holder and used the box cutter to score that line a few times.

    2. After 6-8 passes, I was able to bend and split it off.

    3. Use the Sharpie to color the cut edge black.

  4. Test mount the pole to the holder.

  5. Mark the area on the wall you'd like to attach the holders.

    1. I went through the wall studs in the garage, so I used the stud finder here.

    2. I mounted 1 side, walked the other side up and used the level to locate the drill location.

  6. Mount the 2 holders to the wall.

  7. Secure the broom handle + flag to the wall by pushing it into the holders.
